CalorieTracker.today: shipping an AI calorie tracker that turns search intent into subscriptions

Role: product strategy, full-stack build, SEO/GEO architecture, monetization (Stripe), and Google Ads conversion wiring.

CalorieTracker.today is a live web product at https://calorietracker.today. The idea is simple and high-demand: snap a meal photo, get calorie and macro estimates, then convert engaged users into paid scan plans. The market is crowded with mobile apps (Cal AI, SnapCalorie, MyFitnessPal), so the wedge was a no-install browser product plus free SEO tools that capture intent before the photo scan.

The challenge

Photo calorie tracking alone is not enough to win SEO: head terms like “calorie calculator” often mean daily calorie needs (TDEE), not meal photos—so the product needed both a scanner and classic calculators.

Monetization required real infrastructure: accounts, Google sign-in, Stripe Checkout, webhooks, plan quotas, and admin tools—not a landing-page demo.

With limited ad budget, growth had to lean on organic: indexable tool pages, FAQ/HowTo schema, internal linking, AI-crawler access (robots + llms.txt), and conversion events so every click could be measured.

What shipped

Built the core app in PHP with OpenAI vision analysis, SQLite, session auth, Google OAuth, Stripe subscriptions (Basic / Pro / Unlimited), goals, and an admin panel—hosted on Hostinger with clean URLs and strict CSP.

Shipped high-intent free tools as acquisition engines: BMI calculator, TDEE calculator, calorie deficit calculator, exercise calorie burn, and weight-loss / weight-gain guides—each with FAQ, HowTo/Article schema, and CTAs into the photo scanner and pricing.

Strengthened SEO/GEO: Organization + WebSite + FAQ + breadcrumbs, sitemap expansion, robots allowlists for GPTBot/ClaudeBot/Perplexity and peers, llms.txt, and internal linking from a tools hub. Wired GA4 + Google Ads events (sign_up, begin_checkout, purchase, scan_completed) so Performance Max spend could optimize toward real outcomes.

Outcomes

A production product is live with multi-language UI (EN/IT/DE/FR/SQ), working Stripe billing, photo scanning, goals, and a full SEO tool cluster targeting calorie calculator, calorie tracker, deficit, and AI tracker intents.

The acquisition loop is clear: free calculators and guides → aha moment via photo scan → account/goals → paid plans. Sitelinks and landing URLs in Google Ads now match those tool pages instead of dumping every click on the homepage.

Takeaways for similar SaaS-style tools

Pair the “magic” feature (AI photo scan) with boring high-volume tools (BMI/TDEE). Searchers arrive with calculator intent; the product converts them with a faster habit loop.

Ship conversion tracking before scaling ads. A €2/day Performance Max campaign is wasted if sign_ups and purchases are invisible to the bidding system.
